Mission Statement
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -- Ferris, in Ferris Beuler's Day Off 1986
Mission Statement
Back in 1990, I tried on a pair of in-line skates. I remember I tried them out because they looked like the summer version of skiing, which I was heavily into several winters prior. I thought I would take off immediately and cruise up and down the streets with ease. Boy was I in for a shock.
I had a really hard time my first time skating and was scared. I was a slow learner also, a lot slower than anybody I know at learning to skate and I know it was because I was focusing too much on safety and not paying any attention to the mmost important thing. Having fun. A few months of skating in fear really changed the way I viewed and pursued skating forever.
It's too boring to be focusing on safety all the time. Skates are a teleportation miracle that you can use to go wherever you want. The city on a Saturday afternoon, the park on a Tuesday evening. It's all there for the taking and there are cool things to see and experience every time you skate. These are the things that make us relax and feel good, and when we feel good, we enter a space where we can actually do things that we normally just dream about. Then it's fun, and that's why everyone I've met and coached bought their skates in the first place.
That's why I put the emphasis on fun rather more than safety. Fun actually is a superset of safety because it sure is not fun to get hurt. Every step of any training always incorporates the benefits of the previous step. Safety is step one, Fun is step two, where you get to enjoy the rhythm and motion without worrying all the time. Other teaching methods divide skaters into three categories: Beginner, intermediate, and expert. I believe we are diverse enough to have as many categories as there are skaters because everyone has their own style, it's up to us to develop it. I also construct a lesson plan for each student, and we tailor it based on what we did, what they worked on for homework, and what they will work on for the upcoming lesson.
If you are looking to learn to skate the right way and build a solid foundation for whatever your intended style is, I think we have a solid future ahead of us. Please respond to the phone number for any further questions and I'll be happy to help.
